And just like that, we are one week away from the start of the 2025 League1 BC season!

On April 12, League1 Nanaimo United will face off against the new expansion team, Evolution FC. Evolution is Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club’s pro-am team. They are a club that, like us, hosts a plethora of soccer programs for ages 3 to adult. In League1 BC’s article introducing Evolution, the Executive Director of Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club said “We are incredibly honoured to be awarded this license to become part of a nationwide, standards-based league, bridging the gap between grassroots, high performance, and professional football.” We are looking forward to playing such a like-minded club.

Nanaimo United’s staff are in full gear as they prepare for the season. New tents with the NUFC logo are waiting to be set up and the new flags are ready to stand loud and proud in the stands like you! Big shout-out to our admin Emma Montpetit - thanks to her email and organizing superpowers, there will be a taco truck and ice cream cart waiting for you. We can’t wait to see you at the pitch on April 12.

The women’s game starts at 1 PM. The men’s game follows immediately after at 3:30 PM. A whole afternoon of soccer - no shortage of entertainment that’s for sure! Come cheer on the best in BC!

Last year’s men’s captain Fergus Hall, a Campbell River local calling Nanaimo home again this summer for the League1 season, shared how he’s feeling about getting back on the pitch:

I'm super excited to get started this season and just be back with the team again! We're hoping to build on the positive results from last season that saw us finish in a playoff position. I'm excited to see what the squad can do this year as we aim for an even higher finish. I'm also super excited to be back playing at the Q stadium in front of our fans again, it's been too long!

I have two favorite memories from last year. One of them is the celebrations after we beat TSS at home and clinched a playoff spot for the first time in club history. It was an amazing moment to share with the team and our fans. Another great memory from last season was securing the Reid Davidson Memorial Trophy after winning away in Kamloops. Not only was it a great team win that demonstrated our character, but we were super proud to win the trophy for Reid.

Fergus just finished off his university degree and varsity soccer career at StFX. His experience with his varsity squad offered great learning opportunities and insights he plans on taking with him into the League1 season:

A key takeaway from my final season with StFX is to always be adaptable. I ended up playing right back (typically a center back) for the majority of the season this year, which took some getting used to but I ended up really enjoying it. The team needed me to fill in there, and me being able to adapt quickly to the new position aided us in our success. A second takeaway that I always try to remind myself of is to focus on enjoying the journey rather than just the end goal. A university career goes by quickly, so I really tried to just soak in all of the best moments in my last season as much as possible.

We are now minutes closer to kick off. Let’s cheer on Fergus and the League1 Nanaimo United teams on April 12 and show them some island stoke! Get your tickets here.

See you at the stadium!
