Game Report: Whitecaps Weekend Recap

Don’t worry! We didn’t forget about last weekend’s matches!

And with that, Harbourside is two games away from the end of their season! The men pulled away with a win of 2-1 over the Whitecaps FC Academy, putting them in this year’s playoffs. From their performances this weekend, Callum Weir and Captain Fergus Hall were named two of League1 BC’s players in their Team of the Week. Hall commented on the game:

“I think we defended really well as a team throughout the game and showed great character to get the win on the road. We stayed patient after trailing at halftime to complete the comeback right at the end of the game, which was amazing! Beating [the] Whitecaps away from home is no easy feat, so I’m super proud of our performance across the board!”

The ladies played a very strong game. After conceding two goals in the first half, they put on a show and tied 1-1 in the second half. 3-1 is their best result against the Whitecaps this season. Goalkeeper Milena Ramirez, a last-minute addition to the women’s squad the other week, was named the goalie of League1 BC’s Team of the Week. Early in the game, the Whitecaps winger Katie Collar initiated a deadly play that ultimately led to a strong and well-placed header from striker Kaylee Hunter. Ramirez made a wicked save and took control of the situation.

Shout-out to Ruby Nicholas for a sweet and composed penalty kick taken in the 89th minute. She gave us the low-down:

“I tried to 1v1 two defenders after a great threaded ball in the final third from Sophie Murphy. I beat the first one and tried to cut outside of the second one but was tackled in the penalty box. I knew I wanted to take the penalty and try for a goal in the 89th minute as I felt we were due for one for our efforts in that game! I aimed for the bottom right corner low and hard and it slotted pretty well. I was happy to be able to reflect our team’s grit in the form of a goal, especially after our previous loss against [the] Whitecaps where we weren’t able to slot one earlier in the season.

Whitecaps are obviously regular season champions and extremely technically skilled but I’m proud of our defensive efforts and how low we kept the score relative to our previous game where we conceded 5. Seeing the reward of a goal for how hard we worked offensively was also validating and we’re looking forward to seeing how we can continue those efforts for our double header next weekend!”

Up next: the teams will be wrapping up their season with a doubleheader weekend! Get ready for some serious action July 20 and 21 at the Q'unq'inuqwstuxw Stadium. Their opponents will be the TSS Rovers on Saturday, and Unity FC on Sunday. Do you have your tickets yet? Get them here!
