Swangard Stadium saw some serious action yesterday! Harbourside and TSS battled back and forth, with 6 goals being scored in the men’s game alone! Despite the grit displayed by both Harbourside teams, only one point was brought home to the island.
The men’s game ended 3-3. Harbourside led 2-1 most of the game thanks to early goals by Suka Behery and Billy Bagiolpolous. Suka scored the first goal. He “picked up the ball, and had some space to dribble. I cut in on my right foot and found an opportunity to shoot and I guess the ball went in!” When TSS tied it up in the 49th, Billy brought the men back into the lead soon after. Billy noted that both his goals came from assists from Suka. One of them was off a corner kick, and “the second one from a nice quick counter attack that we were able to capitalize on!” Harbourside held the lead until the 88th minute, when TSS scored their third goal - a tough tie for the lads after a solid effort. Billy mentioned he felt that Harbourside was “up against arguably the best team in the league and we rose to the occasion! We played very well and we had the opportunity to win the game!”
The women’s team also started out strong with an early lead thanks to Jazmine Wilkinson. She described her goal:
“I don’t remember too much but I came down into midfield from the striker position and played Ruby in behind their right fullback. Ruby made a long run, beating her player and cutting the ball back across the 6 yard box for me to slide and tap into the net. I think it was an unselfish play from her, she could’ve taken the shot herself but decided to play me.”
Ruby Nicholas noted that the play started when Jazmine picked off a pass from TSS’ back line. The ladies held the lead until just before the halftime whistle. The game remained tied until a late goal by TSS. Just like the men, it was an unfortunate outcome after a game full of hard work. Ruby said she felt “as though we had better possession and opportunities, so the result is too bad…looking forward to playing Burnaby at home this Saturday!”
As Ruby said, the Harbourside crew is excited to play at home next weekend! They are up against Burnby FC and are ready to put on a show for the home crowd. Do you have your tickets yet? Buy them here!
